One day we decided to take a hike up the mountain behind my house. After about three hours we finally made it to the top and decided to keep following the trail to go down the other side of the mountain. However, the trail led us to a strange man's backyard that was fenced in. Casey and I didn't know what to do so we decided to stand in the mans fenced in backyard contemplating our next move when suddenly, the man came out of his house. I thought that it would be a good idea to try to talk to this man in German (a language that I know almost nothing in) to ask for directions back down the mountain. I felt confident in my german when I asked the question but when he responded I was so flustered that I understood almost nothing of what he said except for his hand motions when he pointed to his backyard. Instead of asking him to repeat the directions I just said thank you in German. I turned to Casey and she asked me what he said and I responded with, "I have no idea". She started laughing at me and I insisted that we run through the man's backyard trying to find an opening in the fence. The man probably thought that we were some strange Americans because we were frolicking through his backyard for about five minutes until we decided to turn around and go back the way we came. It was quite the experience. |
